Understanding your result
One-sheet weight and stack weight describe the paper alone. Paper plus packaging adds the entered box, wrapping, or pallet allowance. Pounds are converted from that combined mass; this is physical weight, not a carrier’s dimensional billing weight.

The formula
GSM means grams per square meter. Converting both dimensions from millimeters to meters gives area, which is multiplied by grammage. Count physical sheets, not printed sides. A duplex-printed sheet has two printed pages but the same single sheet area in this estimate.
Worked example
An A4 sheet measuring 210 × 297 mm has area 0.06237 m². At 80 GSM it weighs 4.9896 g. Five hundred sheets weigh 2.4948 kg; adding 0.2 kg of packaging gives 2.6948 kg before any unentered binding or other materials.

GSM is not the weight of one sheet
Two paper sizes cut from the same stock share the same grammage but weigh different amounts. Doubling both width and height multiplies area and sheet mass by four. Changing the sheet count scales only the stack total; it does not alter the one-sheet weight.
Pages, sheets, and books
For loose duplex pages, divide an even printed-page count by two to find physical sheets. A bound book also contains a cover and binding materials, which should be estimated separately. A folded signature may start as a much larger press sheet, so do not confuse press-sheet count with finished leaf count.
Check a sample near a shipping limit
The model uses nominal dimensions and grammage. Trimming, coatings, ink, moisture, and packaging can move the measured result. If a shipment is close to a service weight limit, weigh a representative packed sample. Dimensional weight requires the package’s outer dimensions and the carrier’s rules, which are outside this calculation.

Common questions
Does duplex printing double paper weight?
No. Two printed sides share one sheet. Count the physical sheets used, while allowing separately for materials not included in the paper specification.
Can GSM tell me spine thickness?
Not by itself. Different papers can share grammage and have different caliper. Use measured thickness or the printer’s stock specification for a spine.
