Understanding your result
The spine combines the interior leaf stack and your supplied allowance. The flat cover includes two trim widths, one spine, and bleed on the outer left and right. Height includes trim height and top/bottom bleed. Odd page counts are padded to the next complete leaf.
To inspect bleed and safe margins for a single print panel, use the Print Bleed Calculator with the printer’s specifications.
The formula
Each physical leaf has two printed sides. Caliper here means one leaf’s thickness, not an amount per numbered page. Cover height is trim height + 2 × bleed. The allowance represents whatever extra spine thickness your printer specifies; it is not automatically inferred from the binding label.
Worked example
A 200-page interior has 100 leaves. At 0.1 mm caliper and 0.5 mm allowance, the spine is 10.5 mm. With a 148 × 210 mm trim and 3 mm bleed, the flat cover is 312.5 × 216 mm.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the full interior page count, including intentional blank pages.
- Supply leaf caliper and the printer’s additional spine allowance.
- Enter trim dimensions and bleed, then compare the estimated cover with the printer’s final template.
Measure thickness independently from weight
GSM describes mass per area, not the thickness of a sheet. Coating, fiber, and manufacturing affect caliper. Use a stock specification or measure a stack and divide by its physical leaf count. If your printer publishes thickness per printed page, do not enter that number as leaf caliper without converting it.
Plan the cover before finalizing the artwork
A spine-width change moves both front and back boundaries in a wraparound design. Recalculate after the final interior PDF page count is settled. Keep spine text and artwork clear of the printer’s specified safe regions; this tool computes outer dimensions, not a downloadable print-ready template.
Match the binding method
The simple flat layout applies to a paperback-style wrap. Hardcover boards, hinges, turn-ins, dust-jacket flaps, and lay-flat constructions need additional dimensions. KDP and other printers provide product-specific cover templates; use the relevant final template for submission rather than treating this generic estimate as approval.
Assumptions & limitations
What this calculation assumes
- Each complete interior leaf has two page sides and uniform thickness.
What to keep in mind
- Does not model signature swell, compression, hardcover case geometry, or platform-specific stock multipliers.
Common questions
Why does 201 pages use 101 leaves?
A physical leaf cannot have only half its thickness. The model allows 202 page sides, leaving one side blank.
Should bleed be added at the spine edges?
Not in this continuous wrap layout. Bleed is added only to the outer perimeter; printer-specific hinge or fold allowances are a separate matter.
