Understanding your result

The main result shows the same mass in the selected target unit. The comparison table gives additional equivalents without changing the original quantity. Although commonly called weight conversion, these units measure mass; the calculator does not calculate a gravitational force.

The formula

Target mass = source mass × kilograms per source unit ÷ kilograms per target unit

Kilograms provide the common basis. One international avoirdupois pound equals 0.45359237 kg, one avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of that pound, and one stone equals fourteen pounds. The metric tonne option means 1,000 kg.

One pound in kilograms

Enter 1, choose Avoirdupois pounds as From, and Kilograms as To. The result is 0.45359237 kg, equivalent to 453.59237 grams or 16 avoirdupois ounces.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the numeric mass and select its source unit.
  2. Select the desired target unit, checking the tonne or ounce definition.
  3. Calculate and read the result with its printed unit.

Mass conversion does not depend on local gravity

A package containing one kilogram of material retains that mass when moved between locations. Its gravitational force can vary, but converting kilograms to pounds here does not need a gravity input.

Force measurements such as newtons or pound-force are therefore absent. Converting a force into a mass would require a separate physical assumption about acceleration.

Ounces and tons need an explicit definition

The ounce on this page is the avoirdupois mass ounce used with ordinary pounds. It is not a fluid ounce, which measures volume, or a troy ounce used in some precious-metal contexts.

The tonne is metric and equals 1,000 kilograms. U.S. short tons and imperial long tons are not included. A label that says only ton should be clarified before using it as a source measurement.

Assumptions & limitations

What this calculation assumes

  • Values are nonnegative and use one of the listed mass units.
  • Pounds and ounces use the international avoirdupois system.

What to keep in mind

  • Fluid ounces, troy ounces, short tons, and long tons are not supported.
  • Output uses up to twelve significant digits; it does not increase the precision of a weighing instrument.

Common questions

Can this convert flour grams to cups?

No. Cups measure volume, so that conversion depends on density and packing. A fixed mass-to-volume factor would not apply to every ingredient.

How many pounds are in a stone?

One stone equals fourteen avoirdupois pounds.

Can I enter pounds and ounces together?

First express the amount as a decimal pound value or entirely as ounces. The field accepts one numeric quantity.
