Credit-weighted GPA including bonuses and interpretation
Weighted GPA includes the eligible bonuses before applying credits. Unweighted GPA uses the same rows without bonuses, and quality points show their credit-weighted total. Your school’s actual transcript rules may differ.
To calculate unweighted GPA from letter grades and credits, use the GPA Calculator and follow its own input conventions.
The formula
Add the selected honors or advanced bonus to each eligible base grade, multiply by course credits, and divide total quality points by total credits. The zero-point selector controls bonus treatment for failed courses.
Verified worked example
Three one-credit courses with base points 4 (AP), 3 (honors), and 4 (regular) use bonuses 1 and 0.5. Weighted quality points are 5 + 3.5 + 4 = 12.5, so GPA is 4.166667.
How to use this calculator
- Enter one row per course: base points from 0 to 4, positive credits, and regular, honors, or ap.
- Set your honors and advanced-course bonuses and choose how zero-point courses receive bonuses.
- Compare weighted and unweighted GPA, confirming that the entered base points did not already include course bonuses.
Weighted GPA input conventions
Weighted GPA adds a course-level bonus before multiplying by credits. This page accepts the base numeric grade points from your school rather than imposing one letter-to-point table. Choose regular, honors, or ap for each row; the ap label represents the configured advanced-course bonus and can stand for an eligible IB or advanced course under your policy.
Interpreting credit-weighted gpa including bonuses
Schools differ in bonus eligibility, plus/minus values, failed-course treatment, repeated courses, and maximum scales. The default 0.5 honors and 1.0 advanced bonuses are examples, not a universal transcript standard. The zero-point selector makes one important rule explicit. This estimate uses every row supplied and does not replace a registrar’s GPA or a college’s recalculation. Avoid adding a bonus again if your entered base points already include the course weighting.
Assumptions & limitations
What this calculation assumes
- Base grade points exclude bonuses and the configured bonus policy matches the intended estimate.
What to keep in mind
- Configurable estimate, not a specific institution’s transcript policy; no automatic repeated-course replacement.
Common questions
Can weighted GPA exceed 4.0?
Yes. Bonuses can place weighted points above the unweighted four-point maximum. The scale and eligibility must match your institution.
What should I enter for a letter grade?
Look up its unweighted point value in your school’s grading table and enter that number between zero and four. Do not assume all schools assign the same plus/minus points.
Can I use the advanced bonus for IB courses?
Yes, if that course is eligible under your chosen policy. Mark it ap to use the configured advanced-course bonus; the label is a grouping choice, not an automatic institutional eligibility decision.
