Converted amount with unit and interpretation

The main result names its target unit and the SI equivalent uses cubic meters. Gallon standards are explicit; all entries in the table represent the same volume rather than a mass estimate.

The formula

Target volume = input × cubic meters per source unit / cubic meters per target unit; 1 L = 0.001 m³.

Multiply by the source unit’s cubic-meter factor and divide by the target factor. Cubic customary units use international lengths; US liquid and Imperial gallon factors are distinct.

Verified worked example

One US liquid gallon equals 3.785411784 liters. One Imperial gallon instead equals 4.54609 liters, so choosing the correct gallon preset matters.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the volume or capacity amount you already know.
  2. Choose the source and target units, distinguishing US liquid from Imperial gallons.
  3. Read the labeled equivalent and table; use a separate density calculation if you need mass.

Volume input conventions

Volume uses cubic length factors while capacity units such as liters represent the same physical quantity. A cubic meter contains one thousand liters. The converter accepts an amount already measured or calculated; it does not ask for container dimensions, wall thickness, or a fill depth. Its SI base-equivalent output is cubic meters.

Interpreting converted amount with unit

US liquid and Imperial gallons are different units and are listed separately. US dry gallons are not supported. The cubic-foot preset uses the international foot, so historical survey-foot cubic values need a separate convention. A unit conversion does not account for density, packing voids, temperature expansion, or a material’s weight. For example, converting cubic yards of gravel to liters still describes volume and does not establish how many kilograms a supplier will deliver.

Assumptions & limitations

What this calculation assumes

  • Gallons are explicitly US liquid or Imperial, and cubic customary units use the international foot.

What to keep in mind

  • US liquid and Imperial capacity units only; no dry gallons, density, or thermal-expansion adjustment.

Common questions

Is a US gallon the same as an Imperial gallon?

No. A US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 L and an Imperial gallon is 4.54609 L. Select the label matching your measurement.

Can this convert liters to kilograms?

No. You also need the material’s density and its applicable conditions. Liters measure volume and kilograms measure mass.

Are US dry gallons included?

No. The US gallon preset is the liquid gallon. Do not apply it to a dry-gallon measurement, which has a different definition.
