Understanding your result

Both unit prices use kilograms for mass, litres for volume, or individual items. The saving compares the lower unit price with the higher one; it is not a discount on the total package price.

The formula

Unit price = package price ÷ quantity in the shared base unit. Saving % = (higher unit price − lower unit price) ÷ higher unit price × 100.

Quantities are converted before division. Mass can be compared with mass and volume with volume; converting between those dimensions would require density, which is not assumed. When both prices are zero, unit prices are equal and the saving is defined as zero.

Worked example

Package A costs 4 for 500 g, which is 8 per kg. Package B costs 7 for 1 kg, which is 7 per kg. B has the lower unit price, saving (8 − 7) ÷ 8 × 100 = 12.5% for the same quantity.

Compare equivalent products and quantities

A unit-price comparison is most meaningful when the products have comparable contents and quality. A concentrated cleaner, a ready-to-use liquid, and a refill may need comparison by usable dose rather than container volume. Enter item counts only when an item means a comparable unit in both packages.

A lower unit price can still mean a larger bill

Bulk packaging can reduce the cost per unit while increasing the amount paid today. Storage, spoilage, and unused product can offset that advantage. Include applicable discounts and consistent taxes in the package prices before comparing. Shipping fees and multi-buy rules are not inferred, and this tool does not convert currencies.

Common questions

Are ounces and fluid ounces interchangeable?

No. Ounces measure mass here, while US fluid ounces measure volume. The tool rejects a comparison across those dimensions.

Can I compare a multi-pack?

Yes. Enter its total price and total usable quantity or item count. Do not use one inner package’s quantity against the whole multi-pack price.
