Required final exam score and interpretation
The required score can fall below zero or above 100%; the feasibility label explains those cases. The maximum course grade assumes a 100% final and the same entered grading weights.
To calculate the current course average from points or weighted categories, use the Grade Calculator and follow its own input conventions.
The formula
Treat the current grade as the average over the completed portion of the course. Subtract its weighted contribution from the target, then divide the remainder by the final exam’s fractional weight.
Verified worked example
With an 88% current grade, a 30%-weighted final, and a 90% target, the required exam score is (90 − 88 × 0.7) / 0.3 = 94.666667%. A 100% final yields 91.6%.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your current percentage average with the final exam excluded.
- Enter the desired course percentage and the final’s percentage weight, such as 30 for 30%.
- Read the required exam score and feasibility label, then check your syllabus for rounding or other passing rules.
Final Grade input conventions
Enter the average for completed work normalized to its own completed share. Do not enter an average that already counts the final as zero, because that would apply the final weight twice. The remaining weight is one minus the exam’s share, and the tool solves the weighted-average equation for the unknown exam score.
Interpreting required final exam score
A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached with an ordinary 100% maximum exam score under these assumptions. A negative result means the completed-work contribution already meets the target, even with a zero final. The calculator reports the algebraic requirement rather than hiding these situations by clamping it. Actual courses can impose separate passing rules, dropped assignments, grade caps, or rounding thresholds that a two-component model does not represent.
Assumptions & limitations
What this calculation assumes
- The current grade excludes the final and is normalized over the completed share of the course.
What to keep in mind
- One remaining weighted final, no extra credit or grade rounding policy; current grade must exclude the final.
Common questions
Is 30 entered as 30 or 0.30?
Enter 30 for a final worth 30% of the course. The calculator converts that percentage to a fractional weight internally.
Will my instructor round the required score?
That depends on the syllabus and grading policy. The tool displays a numerical threshold; confirm how the course rounds exam scores and final averages.
Can this handle extra-credit exam scores?
It reports the algebraic required score, including values above 100%, but its feasibility screen assumes a normal 0–100% exam range. Apply your course’s extra-credit policy separately.
