Concrete mass in pounds, tons, and kilograms

The result describes material mass only. It does not include reinforcement, containers, forms, pallets, or handling equipment. Density is a user input, so a typical value should be replaced by the supplier’s stated figure when available.

The formula

Weight in pounds = volume in ft³ × density in lb/ft³. US short tons = pounds ÷ 2,000. Kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237.

The model multiplies volume by a bulk density supplied for the material. All displayed units represent the same calculated mass. The pounds-to-kilograms factor is exact for the international avoirdupois pound.

Worked example

One cubic yard is 27 ft³. At an entered density of 150 lb/ft³, its weight is 4,050 lb, or 2.025 US short tons and 1,837.049 kg. A different density changes those results in direct proportion.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter concrete volume, concrete density using the units shown.
  2. Check both measurements against their labels before calculating.
  3. Calculate and review concrete weight alongside the supporting quantities.

Volume and density must describe the same material

Lightweight, normal-weight, and heavyweight mixes do not share a single density. Fresh concrete, cured material, and loose demolition debris can also differ. Enter a density appropriate to the state being moved. For broken concrete in a container, voids between pieces mean container volume is not the same as solid concrete volume.

Mass is only one part of load planning

Truck payload, trailer limits, lifting capacity, axle distribution, and supporting structure require their own checks. Add the mass of equipment and other cargo before comparing against a rated limit. A calculated concrete mass cannot certify transport or lifting arrangements, and an assumed density should not override a measured load or supplier ticket.

Assumptions & limitations

What this calculation assumes

  • Density is uniform throughout the entered volume.

What to keep in mind

  • Excludes steel reinforcement, void geometry, and transport or lifting capacity checks.

Common questions

Does a short ton mean 1,000 kg?

No. A US short ton is 2,000 lb. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg.

Can I enter demolished concrete?

Yes, if volume and bulk density describe the same loose material condition, including its voids.

Does this include steel reinforcement?

No. Add reinforcement and other components separately if estimating the mass of a complete element.
