Understanding your result
The selected tip percentage is applied to the pre-tax bill. Tax is added separately, then the combined total is divided by the number of people.
If a bill includes a percentage discount, the Discount Calculator can first work out the reduced pre-tax subtotal; use the appropriate tipping basis for your situation.
The formula
Some people tip on the tax-inclusive total. This calculator uses the pre-tax amount so the base is explicit and reproducible.
Worked example
On a 100 pre-tax bill with 8 tax and a 20% tip, the total is 128. Split four ways, each person pays 32 including a 5 tip share.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the pre-tax bill and the tip percentage you choose.
- Enter tax as a currency amount, not a percentage, and the whole number of people sharing the bill.
- Review total with tip, total per person, and tip per person. Check the receipt for an existing service charge before paying.
Choose the tipping base deliberately
A receipt often shows both subtotal and total. Applying a percentage to subtotal avoids tipping on tax.
Local customs, service charges, and personal judgment determine an appropriate tip.
Splitting equally is one method
An even split is convenient when orders are similar. Different orders or shared items may call for itemized contributions.
Check whether a service charge is already included before adding another gratuity.

- Tax is entered as an amount, not a rate.
