Estimated nominal APR and supporting figures

The contractual rate determines the level monthly installment. Bisection solves the monthly discount rate that values those installments at the net amount received, then annualizes that rate by multiplication.

The formula

Net proceeds = principal − upfront fees; net proceeds = Σ monthly payment ÷ (1 + monthly APR rate)ᵗ; nominal APR = monthly rate × 12 × 100

The contractual rate determines the level monthly installment. Bisection solves the monthly discount rate that values those installments at the net amount received, then annualizes that rate by multiplication.

Worked loan apr example

A 100,000 loan at zero contract interest repaid over 30 years with no upfront fees has a 277.78 monthly payment and 0% APR. Deducting finance fees raises APR even when the contract rate stays unchanged.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter loan amount, annual interest rate, amortization term.
  2. Set upfront finance fees deducted from proceeds using the stated units or choices.
  3. Calculate and compare estimated nominal apr, monthly payment, net loan proceeds, interest plus entered fees.

Choosing inputs for loan apr

Interest rate and APR describe different costs. The contract rate sets the interest charged on principal, while APR can reflect finance charges included in the borrowing arrangement. Here the fee control represents charges paid at origination or withheld from proceeds, so the borrower receives principal less those fees but repays installments based on the full principal.

Do not enter every settlement expense as a finance charge without checking how it is treated. Regulatory APR disclosures depend on the product and fee classification. This calculator uses the fee amount you identify and assumes equal end-of-month payments; it does not reproduce every disclosure rule or verify a lender’s legally required APR.

Interpreting estimated nominal apr

The estimated APR is nominal annualized: twelve times the solved monthly rate. It is not the effective annual rate obtained by compounding that rate twelve times. Lower fees or a longer repayment horizon can reduce the annualized impact of an upfront charge, but the total finance charge remains a separate monetary measure.

Assumptions & limitations

What this calculation assumes

  • Fees are paid upfront and not added to the contract principal.
  • Payments are equal monthly installments with the first one exactly one month later.

What to keep in mind

  • Irregular first periods, excluded fees, variable rates, balloons, insurance, and statutory tolerances are outside this estimate.

Common questions

Is this the same as effective annual interest?

No. APR here multiplies the periodic rate by twelve; effective annual interest compounds it.

What if fees equal the loan amount?

Net proceeds would be zero, so fees must be smaller than the principal.

Are fees financed into the loan amount?

This model treats entered fees as paid upfront or deducted from proceeds. It does not add them to the contractual principal.
