Insulation packages and nominal material resistance
Package count rounds upward and includes the entered allowance. Nominal R-value applies to the insulation material only. Framing, gaps, compression, moisture, and other heat paths affect the complete assembly.
For the surface area to enter before package planning, the Square Footage Calculator can measure a rectangular section.
The formula
Coverage determines purchase quantity while thickness and the supplied material rating determine nominal thermal resistance. The two calculations are separate. Installed thickness must match the condition for which the product’s R-value is stated.
Worked example
A 500 ft² area with 40 ft² per package and a 5% allowance needs 14 packages, covering 560 ft². Material installed at 3.5 in with R-3.5 per inch has a nominal material R-value of 12.25.
How to use this calculator
- Enter net area to insulate, coverage per package using the units shown.
- Set cutting allowance, installed material thickness, product r-value per inch.
- Calculate and review packages to purchase alongside the supporting quantities.
Read coverage at the intended thickness
Loose-fill products may state different bag coverage at different installed depths or settled thicknesses. Batt packages have specific widths and lengths. Use the coverage corresponding to your chosen installation. An area estimate cannot show whether every cavity width matches the product or whether an irregular roof layout requires extra cuts.
Material rating is not whole-wall performance
R-value describes resistance to heat flow, but multiplying a per-inch value assumes the material rating is valid at that thickness. Thermal bridges through framing and gaps can reduce assembly performance. Use climate-appropriate requirements and product installation instructions separately. This tool does not choose a code-compliant R-value or estimate utility savings.
Assumptions & limitations
What this calculation assumes
- Package coverage and R-value per inch apply to the stated installed condition.
What to keep in mind
- Excludes whole-assembly R-value, compression modeling, air sealing, and code selection.
Common questions
Can I use this for blown insulation?
Yes, when package coverage and thickness are taken from the product table for the intended installation.
Why is the whole wall R-value different?
Framing and other heat paths bypass part of the insulation. The displayed rating describes only the entered material.
Does increasing the waste allowance change R-value?
No. Waste changes package quantity. Nominal material R-value depends on thickness and the entered material rating.
