Understanding your result
Estimated order profit subtracts modeled seller fees and entered costs from revenue after discounts and sales taxes. Revenue after seller fees still has to cover production and fulfillment. Margin is profit divided by revenue; it is undefined when revenue is zero. The circular chart shows non-negative shares of revenue. For a loss, the bar chart and itemized amounts remain visible instead of displaying a misleading circle.
To compare the same revenue and total costs outside a marketplace-specific fee model, use the Profit Margin Calculator and include all selling fees in the cost input.
After estimating contribution per order, use the Break-Even Calculator to find the sales volume needed to cover monthly fixed costs.
The formula
Processing uses gross receipts plus separately collected buyer tax, multiplied by the country rate, plus one fixed charge per order. Regulatory and Offsite Ads rates use gross receipts. Listing allocation is the USD 0.20 charge converted and rounded per item, multiplied by quantity plus extra renewals. Offsite Ads are capped at USD 100 converted to the selected currency. Discount and fee components round to cents before summing. Costs equal per-item cost × quantity + actual shipping + other order costs. A 100% discount is permitted; a fixed discount greater than the item subtotal is rejected.
A USD 40 item with buyer-paid shipping
One item sells for USD 40, with USD 5 charged for shipping. Item cost is USD 12, actual shipping USD 5, and other costs USD 1. With no buyer tax or Offsite Ad, revenue is USD 45. Listing allocation is USD 0.20; transaction fees round from USD 2.925 to USD 2.93; processing is USD 1.60. Total fees are USD 4.73 and profit is USD 22.27, a 49.49% margin. Selecting 15% Offsite Ads adds USD 6.75 and reduces profit to USD 15.52.
How to use this calculator
- Select the seller country and enter every price and cost in the currency shown. For Canada or Australia, select the order destination.
- Outside the US, supply local-currency units per USD 1 from your account exchange rate. Changing country preserves the numbers you typed; review them in the new currency.
- Enter the pre-discount item price, quantity, buyer-paid shipping, and either a fixed order discount or percentage discount. Add your product and shipping costs.
- Choose the Offsite Ads rate, then open Advanced options for gift wrap, sales taxes, renewals, and additional costs or fees. Results update as valid inputs change; Calculate also checks and focuses errors.
Which Etsy fees are included?
The calculator separates listing allocation, transaction fees, processing, regulatory fees, and attributed Offsite Ads. Etsy’s transaction rate is 6.5%. The selected country sets processing and regulatory rates; the review date is shown below. Taxes on seller fees and other account charges are entered as amounts under Advanced options.
A listing cost is allocated to each sold item, even when paid before this order. Extra renewals let you allocate expired listings. This is a profit model rather than a prediction of when each charge will appear on a payment statement.
Seller countries, processing, and regulatory fees
The United States preset uses USD and processing of 3% plus 0.25. The United Kingdom uses GBP and 4% plus 0.20. Germany and France use EUR and 4% plus 0.30. India uses INR and 5% plus 25. Canada uses CAD: 3% plus 0.25 for Canadian or US buyers and 4% plus 0.25 for other destinations. Australia uses AUD: 3% plus 0.25 domestically and 4% plus 0.25 internationally.
The regulatory percentages are 0.48% for the UK, 0.50% for Canada, 1.14% for France, and 0.05% for India. The US, Germany, and Australia presets have no regulatory operating charge. France, India, and the UK reflect Etsy’s June 22, 2026 update. These figures are reviewed presets, not an account feed.
The listing charge and advertising cap originate in USD. For example, with an assumed rate of INR 85 per USD, one listing allocation is INR 17 and the advertising cap is INR 8,500. This example is not a current exchange quote. Indian Etsy Payments use Payoneer USD deposits; an INR planning result does not reproduce Payoneer’s withdrawal or conversion charges. Add known allocated charges separately.
Model a discount before accepting a lower margin
A fixed discount applies once to the combined item subtotal, not once per item. A percentage discount applies to that same subtotal. Neither reduces the shipping or gift-wrap charge. If a promotion also discounts shipping, enter the reduced shipping amount directly.
Using the original worked example, a 20% item discount removes USD 8 from the USD 40 item. With USD 5 shipping, USD 18 costs, no tax, and no Offsite Ad, revenue becomes USD 37. Fees are USD 0.20 listing, USD 2.41 transaction, and USD 1.36 processing. Profit is USD 15.03, or 40.62%. A USD 8 fixed discount gives the same result. The sale price fell 20%, but profit fell by more than 20% because costs did not fall.
Compare Offsite Ads against the same order
Use 12% or 15% only when Etsy attributes the order to Offsite Ads. The calculator retains the per-order cap and compares both rates with no attributed ad. Qualification depends on Etsy’s sales-threshold rules, not the value of this one order.
The scenario table holds price, quantity, tax amounts, and costs constant. It does not forecast advertising conversions or sales growth. Ordinary Etsy Ads spending is a separate cost; allocate it under other order costs if needed.
Avoid counting sales taxes twice
Sales tax collected separately by Etsy is excluded from revenue and included in the processing base. Do not add it to the item price as well. For non-US sellers, listed prices can contain tax you are responsible for remitting: keep that tax inside the entered price and put its amount under Tax included in your prices. It is deducted from revenue but remains in percentage-fee bases.
The calculator does not determine whether a supply is taxable, calculate VAT or GST, or infer taxes from the country selection. Enter tax amounts for the actual discounted order. Known taxes on seller fees belong in Other seller fees or fee taxes, not the buyer-tax field.
Shipping, digital downloads, and deposits
Shipping charged to a buyer is revenue, while postage is an expense. Compare a separate shipping charge with a higher item price and zero buyer-paid shipping, keeping your actual fulfillment cost unchanged. For digital downloads, set both shipping amounts to zero and include any relevant design, licensing, or support allocation in your costs.
A bank deposit can combine multiple orders, refunds, reserves, subscriptions, and tax adjustments. Profit here is before income tax and unentered account costs. It is not a promised payout. A loss stays negative; increasing quantity multiplies product revenue and production cost, while fixed order-level inputs remain unchanged.
Assumptions & limitations
What this calculation assumes
- One Etsy Payments order contains identically priced and costed items. Shipping, tax amounts, gift wrap, other costs, and fixed discounts are order totals.
- All inputs use the seller currency shown. Exchange rates are supplied by the user; the calculator does not convert previously entered sale prices when the country changes.
- Seven country presets were checked against Etsy sources on September 25, 2026. Use the processing schedule matching your bank country and destination.
What to keep in mind
- VAT/GST rates, tax eligibility, taxes on fees, income tax, TDS/TCS withholding, and Payoneer charges are not inferred. Enter known fee taxes and conversion costs separately.
- Refunds, returns, reserves, payout dates, subscription credits, setup-fee allocation, and listing promotions are not automatically modeled.
- Exchange rates and rounding on individual Etsy charges can differ from this estimate. The India preset is an INR cost-planning model, not a prediction of a USD Payoneer deposit.
Common questions
How much does Etsy take from a USD 100 sale?
For a US order with one USD 100 item, no discount, shipping, gift wrap, buyer tax, extra fees, or Offsite Ad, modeled fees total USD 9.95 and revenue after fees is USD 90.05. This is before product and other costs. Other countries use their own processing and regulatory presets.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Shipping charged to the buyer forms part of the transaction and processing bases. An attributed Offsite Ad also uses that shipping revenue. Your postage expense is a separate cost, so the calculator asks for both amounts.
Why enter sales tax if Etsy collects it?
The US processing fee uses the tax-inclusive amount. For example, USD 8 buyer tax adds USD 0.24 to the modeled 3% processing charge. The tax itself is not counted as your revenue or profit.
Does the USD 0.25 processing fee multiply by quantity?
No. This calculator models one order, so its fixed processing charge is applied once. Item revenue, production cost, and the ordinary listing allocation multiply by quantity. Run separate calculations for separate orders.
Is this affiliated with Etsy?
No. ToolForage is an independent calculator. Use Etsy’s payment account and published policies to reconcile actual charges.
How do country and currency changes work?
The country selects a processing rate, fixed charge, regulatory rate, and calculation currency. Outside the US, enter local-currency units per USD to convert listing charges and the advertising cap. Your price and cost inputs retain their numbers; review them rather than assuming an automatic currency conversion.
Is the discount per item or per order?
A fixed discount is one amount off the complete item subtotal. A percentage discount reduces that subtotal proportionally. Shipping and gift wrap are separate. For a per-item discount, multiply it by quantity before entering the fixed amount.
Why is the chart missing when I lose money?
A circle cannot represent negative profit as a share of positive revenue. The calculator shows the loss in the result and signed bar chart, preserving the fees and costs rather than hiding the shortfall.
